









Taken around Lake Superior, these images are part of an ongoing series exploring the impact of iron, copper, and precious metal mining as well as the timber industry on the region. With many communities having already experienced a mining bust by the mid 20th century, the human and environmental impacts of this once thriving industry continue to be unwound today. These images are mostly Kallitypes, which utilizes silver and other precious metal salts-- themselves (fortunate) byproducts of copper mining in the Keweenaw peninsula of Upper Michigan in the late 19th century. The following images were included in a show at the Univeristy of Wisconsin- Madison School of Education Gallery in April of 2024
